In a recent interview, Dr. Lauren Borowski from NYU Langone talked to Dexter Henry of New York Post Sports about the recovery progress of the New York Yankees' Anthony Rizzo.

The Yankees slugger has been out of action since suffering a fractured arm in a game against the Boston Red Sox in mid-June.

Since the injury, replacements DJ LeMahieu and Ben Rice have both failed to offer any substantial production in Anthony's place. Currently scheduled for a rehab assignment with double-A Somerset Patriots, the ETA on the first baseman's return is around 6-8 weeks.

Asked what a typical timeline would be for such an injury, Dr. Borowski said (0:39):

"Usually it's about 6-8 weeks, so he's really on track for recovery. As long as all other health conditions and metabolic conditions are set and are good for him, he should be good to go with 6-8 weeks."

Further, she explained the injury suffered by Rizzo and why he didn't require surgery (1:20).

"Most likely what he had was something called a non-displaced fracture, meaning that the ends of the fractured pieces were very close to each other. If they are further apart or they are angulated to a certain degree, or if the ulna is also affected, those are some considerations for when we would go for surgery."

Finally, Dr. Borowski talked about the factors that team doctors look at to decide whether an injured player is ready to make their return to action (2:24).

"One of the things we look at when we're returning anyone with a fracture back to higher intensity play is whether or not there's been a bony callous that has formed around the fractured edges. When we fracture a bone, the body lays down more bone around the fracture site, and then remodels it to make it look like it did previously. We see that on x-ray, so that's why we continuously take x-rays every couple of weeks.
"Then, we start to add in more intensity to the workouts, we want to make sure we're gradually adding back intensity, weight training and high impact like he would experience when he's hitting a baseball off of a bat."

Yankees slump to series loss as Nats take two out of three in Washington

The New York Yankees lost the final game of the series against the Washington Nationals 5-2, as the hosts got on the board early, scoring 2 runs in each of the first two innings. Starting pitcher Carlos Rodon struggled on the mound, giving up 8 hits and 5 runs, as the Yankees hitters also had a night to forget.

After winning the opening game of the series, the Yankees lost the next two to slump to a disappointing series loss. They had initially come to the capital with the momentum of two consecutive series wins behind them.

Next, the Yankees head back home, inviting the St. Louis Cardinals to the Bronx for a three-game series. Marcus Stroman, who has been in strong form off late, takes the mound for the home side on Friday as they aim to get back to winning ways in front of their fans.
