LA Dodgers slugger Freddie Freeman was placed on the family emergency list on Saturday after his son, Maximus, became ill. Maximus was transported to the hospital to undergo tests, causing Freeman to miss Saturday and Sunday's games against the Houston Astros.
The club knows how important family is to the All-Star first baseman, so it has no plans to rush him back.
The family emergency list is a bit different from the injured list. Players can miss three to seven days. This would allow him to return for Tuesday's opener at the earliest, but that is unlikely.
3 possible replacements for MVP Freddie Freeman amid family emergency
#1 - Will Smith
Will Smith has experience playing first base when Freddie Freeman has needed rest. He could easily slide over to the right side of the infield, but that does not seem to be in the plans, per LA Times' Jack Harris.
#2 - Hunter Feduccia
Hunter Feduccia was called up when word of Freeman hitting the family emergency list emerged. He has yet to make his Major League debut, with Will Smith and Austin Barnes ahead of him in the depth chart.
Feduccia could get some work at first base as Freeman has not been available. But, that would be his first appearance at first base throughout his professional career.
#3 - Cavan Biggio
Cavan Biggio has been the player the Dodgers have used with Freeman out and he has held the position down. In his last two games, he has gone 3-for-8 with three runs batted in and a home run.
LA could stick with Biggio while they take on the San Diego Padres this week, but they certainly have other options at their disposal.
