The MLB Awards continued to roll on as the winners of the 2024 Silver Slugger were revealed on Tuesday night. There seems to be no obvious snub in this year's list, but a few players might feel a little hard done by the results.
We look at one hitter from each league who seemingly also had a fair claim to win the Silver Slugger Award.
Yordan Alvarez (American League 2024 Silver Slugger Finalist at DH)
It was good to see Oakland Athletics slugger Brent Rooker receive his due after getting snubbed for the All-Star Game earlier this year. However, Yordan Alvarez of the Houston Astros may be disappointed not to win the award for DH in the American League, since he had the superior numbers in several categories.
Brent Rooker batted .293/.365/.562 during the regular season with an OPS+ of 165. The 30-year-old right-hander set career-high marks with 67 extra-base hits, including 39 home runs and 112 RBIs. At the same time, he also racked up 177 strikeouts, which meant that he struck out in nearly a third of his at-bats.
On the other hand, Yordan Alvarez ended the regular season with a .308/.392/.567 slash line and an OPS+ of 172. However, he fell short of Rooker with 35 home runs and 86 RBIs. Nevertheless, Alvarez had 95 strikeouts to his name, which highlights his superior consistency inside the batter's box.
Alec Bohm (National League 2024 Silver Slugger Finalist at 3B)
San Diego Padres superstar Manny Machado claimed the second Silver Slugger Award of his stellar career, even though it would probably not go down as one of the vintage campaigns of the potential Hall of Famer. It could well be argued that Philadelphia Phillies' third baseman was just as impressive in the National League.
Manny Machado batted .275/.325/.472 during the regular season and finished with an OPS+ of 120. He produced 59 extra-base hits, which included 29 home runs and 105 RBIs. Machado also had an excellent strikeout rate of just over 17% in his at-bats and earned 45 walks during the year.
Meanwhile, Alec Bohm earned his maiden All-Star Game selection this year and posted a .280/.332/.448 slash line along with an OPS+ of 117. He also racked up 61 extra-base hits, with 15 homers and 97 RBIs. He also had a lower strikeout rate than Machado at 15%, besides earning 40 walks in the regular season.
