The New York Yankees might have a future star in Carlos Narvaez. The young catching prospect exploded onto the scene against the Washington Nationals when he lifted his team to victory with a stunning walk-off home run.
Narvaez wasn't the starting catcher for the day, that was Kyle Higashioka. The team started a lot of MLB regulars yesterday, but it was the prospect who carried them to victory.
Narvaez went 1/2 with that two-run home run to end the game after relieving Higashioka late in the game.
The young catcher fell behind in the count 1-2 with two outs and a runner on first base. He promptly served a 93-mph sinker into the right field bleachers to end the game.
The ball fell just over the wall and just past the right fielder's best attempts at robbing it, but the game was over nonetheless. On a day when Aaron Judge, Giancarlo Stanton, DJ LeMahieu and others played, it was the young Carlos Narvaez who rose to the occasion.
Is Carlos Narvaez going to make the Yankees' Opening Day roster?
It's hard to ignore heroics like what Carlos Narvaez did yesterday, even if it occurred in a totally meaningless spring game. However, it was good to see him barrell the ball up and come up in a big spot.
Despite that, it's very unlikely that he will make the roster. He's not in the Yankees' top 30 prospects, which means there's very little belief that he can be a contributing player at the major league level.
The Yankees are also not really in need of a catcher. They have the best defensive catcher in baseball in Jose Trevino and they have Wednesday's starter, Kyle Higashioka, behind him.
Narvaez likely won't be a player the Yankees ever need, especially with Ben Rortvedt behind them and fourth overall prospect Austin Wells waiting in the wings.
Still, it's nice to see the Yankees get contributions from surprising places, and this will be something Carlos Narvaez never forgets. He may never make the majors, but he'll always have an awesome walk-off home run to his name.
