Although Randy Arozarena was born in Havana, Cuba, in 1995, he treated fans of Team Mexico to a show in the WBC after appearing in the colors of his adopted country.

Prior to the tournament, Arozarena's Mexican identity was unknown to most MLB fans. The outfielder defected to Mexico in 2016 and began playing for Mayos de Navojoa in Sonora, Mexico.

Ahead of the 2023 World Baseball Classic, Arozarena took to Instagram to ask Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, the President of Mexico, for citizenship. Arozarena wanted to take to the world stage so he could represent his new nation.

To the surprise of many, the Mexican President granted citizenship to the Cuban-born Arozarena, who readied himself to play in the World Baseball Classic. Randy Arozarena ended up being one of the strongest players in the tournament, hitting .450/.607/.950 with one home run and nine RBIs.

His crowning moment came during Mexico's semifinal match against Japan at LoanDepot Park, home of the Miami Marlins. With Mexico defending a 3-0 lead, Arozarena made a leaping grab at the wall to rob NPB star Kazuma Okamoto of a home run.

Although the St. Louis Cardinals were the first team that Arozarena signed with when he came to the United States in 2019, he did not spend very long with the team. Arozarena went 4-for-20 with his first MLB home run in 19 games with the Cards in 2019.

In 2021, Arozarena was traded to the Tampa Bay Rays. He had a breakout season, hitting .274/.356/.459 with 20 home runs and 69 RBIs and became the first Rays player since Wil Myers in 2013 to win the Rookie of the Year award.

After another strong performance in 2022, the Rays re-signed Arozarena to a one-year deal that will see him make $4.15 million in 2023. Experts say that the Mexican star could be in for far bigger offers next offseason.

Although Arozarena was front and center for the Rays during their 2021 AL West-winning run, fans across the globe are now firmly aware of who he is. His catch against Japan was watched by tens of millions, and he will hope to carry that momentum forward as the Rays start their season later this month.
