Why is Carlos Correa not playing in WBC? Analyzing Puerto Rico star's withdrawal

Carlos Correa had one of the most contentious offseasons of any player in baseball. Since finally settling on a team, Correa has announced that he will not be representing his home island of Puerto Rico in the upcoming World Baseball Classic.

The World Baseball Classic is taking place for the first time since 2017. Although originally scheduled for last year, it was rescheduled amidst concerns derived from the COVID-19 pandemic.

Correa was a pivotal part of Team Puerto Rico in 2017. Appearing at third base instead of his usual shortstop position, Correa made some incredible defensive plays. He was named to the tournament's All-Star team as Puerto Rico eventually went down to Team USA in the final.

Correa was originally committed to playing for Puerto Rico again in 2023. The team is set to kick off their action against Nicaragua on March 11th at LoanDepot Park, home of the MLB's Miami Marlins.

However, Carlos Correa withdrew in early February. He explained that his wife, Daniella Rodriguez, is expecting their third child in mid-March, just as Team Puerto Rico will be beginning their WBC campaign. Understandably, Correa prefers to stay home and support his wife.

Weeks later, he will start his second season for the Minnesota Twins. Correa confused Twins fans after walking out following the first of a 3-year deal at the end of 2022.

The offseason saw Correa flirt with a number of teams, including the New York Mets, even going so far as to outline deals. However, no contracts were ever finalized and Correa finally decided to return to the Twins, signing a 6-year deal worth $270 million.

With the season looming, Carlos Correa may be wise to take a WBC break

Managers are notoriously wary of the World Baseball Classic, held on the eve of the new season. It represents a prime opportunity for injury just as the new season is set to get underway. By missing the tournament, Correa ensures that he is not only there for his wife, but is in the best possible condition as he seeks to get back to the good graces of Twins fans in the season ahead.
