Why Cody Bellinger could be the Yankees’ key offseason target regardless of Juan Soto’s status

Cody Bellinger is a probable option the New York Yankees are looking to bring in. The Cubs are looking to trade away one of their biggest stars in exchange of roster depth. The outfielder and 1B could be incoporated into the Yankees sytem even if they grab Juan Soto.

The major reason why Bellinger would be a good fit in the Bronx is his versatility, as he has spent time in the outfield and first base. He would be an upgrade on the infielders they have tried at the position. The 29-year-old could also be used in rotation with Aaron Judge, who has been prone to injuries, in the outfield.

However, the biggest challenge facing the Bombers would be adjusting their already hefty payroll with Cody Bellinger's salary. He's expected to earn $52.5 million over the next two years, with $27.5 million in 2025. Even if the team keeping him opt out of the contract after next year, they would have to pay a buyout of $5 million.

Moreover, the Cubs have also indicated that it's unlikely that they are looking to eat up a chunk of the two-time All-Star's salary. That's partly due to the team willing to move on from Bellinger, who hit a decent .266 season with 18 home runs this year. It was certainly down from his 2023 seasonm where he hit 28 home runs with a solid .307 average.

Bellinger had the option to opt out of his contract and head into free agency but declined that offer, as he was certain that he wouldn't receive any mega contracts this time.

Yankees to battle Mariners and Astros for Cody Bellinger

Like the Yankees, the Seattle Mariners and the Houston Astros have also reportedly inquired. Both teams could make room for Cody Bellinger.

The Mariners have a choice between in-house options and going for free agent 1B veterans like Carlos Santana and Justin Turner, while the Astros are looking for Jose Abreu's replacement in the corner.

Unike the other two, the Yankees' luxury tax would take a seriousl toll if they bring in Bellinger. New York will be paying luxury tax for the third straight season.

Because of their strong pursuit of Juan Soto, it's a guarantee that the team is willing to spend, but whether that will be in conjunction with other top stars in the market remains to be seen.
