Why was Manny Machado ejected? Padres star involved in fiery clash with umpire over pitch clock

Arizona Diamondbacks v San Diego Padres
Homeplate umpire Ron Kulpa ejects Manny Machado of the San Diego Padres after he argued being called out on a timed third strike against the Arizona Diamondbacks.

On Tuesday night, Manny Machado, the star third baseman for the San Diego Padres, was ejected against the Arizona Diamondbacks for arguing with the home plate umpire, Ron Kulpa. The incident occurred in the first innings with the score tied at 0-0.

Machado started the game as the designated hitter for the Padres and was attempting to call time but was denied by the umpire. Subsequently, Kulpa called for a third a strike due to a pitch clock violation from Machado, who approached Kulpa to argue the call.

Manny Machado was visibly upset and began arguing with Kulpa, who warned him to calm down. However, he continued to argue with the umpire and was eventually ejected from the game.

The incident reignited a heated debate about the pitch clock and its enforcement. The new pitch clock rules were introduced during Spring Training as a way to speed up the play and reduce game time. It requires pitchers to deliver the ball within 20 seconds of receiving it from the catcher and batters to be in the box and ready to hit with at least eight seconds left on the clock.

Critics of the pitch clock argue that it takes away from the natural flow of the game and puts unnecessary pressure on players. Others, though, believe that it's necessary to keep the game moving and prevent long delays between pitches.

After the game, umpire Ron Kulpa said that he ejected the Padres star, as he had called him a 'douchebag' during the altercation.

Players learning to live with new pitch clock rules as Manny Machado falls victim

Over the first few days of the 2023 MLB season, it's clear that players are still getting used to the new pitch clock rules that have been enforced this season.

On Opening Day, there were 14 pitch clock violations in 15 games. That paints a clear picture of the adjustment period needed for players to get comfortable with the rule changes.

Manny Machado was the latest victim of the new rules, and the San Diego Padres star's reaction did not help his cause. Eventually, the Diamondbacks went on to win 8-6. However, the incident involving Machado and Kulpa is likely to be a topic of discussion for weeks as the debate over the pitch clock and its impact on the game continues.
