While Bryce Harper had previously committed to playing for the United States at the World Baseball Classic this coming spring, this will no longer be the case. The two-time MVP will sit out of the international tournament as he recovers from elbow surgery.

After Harper was diagnosed with a torn UCL in May of last season, and while the injury prevented him from throwing, he was able to remain in the lineup as a DH for the entirety of the 2022 season. The superstar underwent successful Tommy John Surgery, which was performed by Dr. Neal S. Elattrache.
Originally, Harper and the team felt that he could have an internal brace procedure, which generally requires less recovery time than Tommy John surgery. However, the extent of the UCL tear was substantial enough that he had to undergo full surgery.
Even though the United States will be without Harper for the World Baseball Classic, the team's roster is one of the strongest entering the tournament. While his absence will be missed, the team will be able to throw out an outfield that includes Mike Trout, Mookie Betts, and Kyle Tucker.

The recovery timeline from Tommy John surgery can range anywhere from nine to 18 months for a pitcher. Meanwhile, Bryce Harper should return earlier given the fact that he will be a DH for the Phillies. Given that he performed at an MVP level with a torn UCL, he should be better than ever upon his return.
A look at Bryce Harper's 2022 season
It was a rough season for Harper, as he also missed time after being hit by a 97 mph fastball by San Diego Padres lefty Blake Snell. While he was able to return in late August, he struggled to find his form toward the end of the regular season.
Harper only managed to appear in 99 games for the Phillies last year, hitting 18 home runs and 65 RBIs, while maintaining a .286 batting average. While it was a difficult regular season for the former MVP, he was a force for Philadelphia in the postseason.

Through the 17 games of the Phillies' World Series run, Bryce Harper batted an incredible .349 with six home runs and 13 RBIs, posting a 1.160 OPS. While the Phillies eventually fell to the Houston Astros in six games, Harper's quest for a World Series ring dominated the MLB universe.
