New York Yankees infielder DJ LeMahieu was placed on the 10-day injured list on Monday due to a right hip impingement. The move is retroactive to Friday, although LeMahieu hasn’t played a game for the team since last Tuesday.

At the same time, the Yankees promoted top prospect Jasson Dominguez from AAA to the major leagues before their Monday series opener against the Kansas City Royals. Before being placed on the IL, DJ LeMahieu was on a five-game hitting streak.

Yankees manager Aaron Boone recently spoke about DJ LeMahieu’s potential return to the majors this season (via SNY TV):

“I wouldn’t necessarily rule it out but I wouldn’t count on it. I don’t think there’s more tests planned right now, it’s just what’s the best course of action that him and the training staff will decide on,” Boone said.

Some other roster moves the Bronx Bombers made included bringing back infielder Jon Berti from the 60-day injured list and removing left-handed pitcher Anthony Misiewicz from the roster by designating him for assignment.

Yankees manager Aaron Boone discusses DJ LeMahieu's injury

DJ LeMahieu's hip injury is the second time he has had to sit out during the 2024 season. At the start of the season, he was placed on the injured list due to a right foot injury. He made his season debut in May.

Boone also discussed LeMahieu's injury before Monday’s game:

“It’s been something that’s been kind of lingering the last couple of weeks. He’s been getting treatment on it. It’s better some days, worse the others. Just something that’s been kind of lingering for a few weeks now,” he said.
“I don’t know if it was [anything] initial. I don’t know if it’s just part of, he’s obviously had core surgery in the past, obviously the different things that have happened to him — fouling the ball off his shin and the stuff that’s going on with his feet. It could just be the result of the wear and tear and the rigors of the season,” Boone added.

DJ LeMahieu has been struggling this season, batting .204 with two home runs, 26 RBIs and a .527 OPS in 67 games played. After splitting their first two games against the Royals, the series will be decided in the final game of their three-game series at Yankee Stadium on Wednesday.
