Shohei Ohtani and Mike Trout are about to participate in a championship game. No, the Los Angeles Angels haven't put together a contender and the two superstars haven't carried them through the MLB playoffs. These two teammates are in the World Baseball Classic final tonight.
Team USA, led by their captain Mike Trout, will face off with Team Japan, led by the two-way brilliance of Shohei Ohtani, tonight at 7 pm after Japan walked off Mexico last night.
While the two teammates facing off is exciting, an at-bat matchup with Ohtani on the mound and Trout in the box would be must-see television.
Might baseball fans see Shohei Ohtani pitch to Mike Trout?
Unfortunately, Shohei Ohtani is not getting the start tonight, robbing WBC fans of potentially two or three plate appearances featuring the Angels teammates squaring off.
In his place will be Shota Imanaga. However, this doesn't preclude their direct matchup. Ohtani will more than likely be used in relief. He hasn't pitched in a couple of games, so he could be used.
With this being the WBC final, managers will pull out all the stops. Since Ohtani is Japan's best pitcher and perhaps the best from the entire WBC, he's probably going to be on the mound.
If the baseball gods are smiling today, that will be in a situation where Trout comes to the plate. It would be an absolute shame to see Ohtani pitch a couple of innings in relief and not have to face his Angels teammate.
If they do face off, expect it to be one of the most legendary at-bats of all time.
