The San Francisco Giants signed Willy Adames, one of the best free agent shortstops, this offseason on a seven-year, $182 million contract. It's the largest contract in Giants history, surpassing the $167 million deal in 2013 for catcher and current president Buster Posey.
Willy Adames joins third baseman Matt Chapman, who had got a six-year, $151 million contract extension by the Giants in September. While talking with a Giants reporter, Adames revealed that he has gotten in touch with Chapman and discussed guarding the left side of infield.
"Yeah, we've been talking for the last two days," Adames said. "He was excited because, you know, during the summer when I came here, he was like, 'Me and you on the left side, it's going to be amazing.' And I was like, 'Well, let's make it happen.'
"He's been one of the best on the corner for the last seven years. I feel like we're going to work to try to make each other better. I think it's going to be a great experience. I think fans are going to love that. It's not the worst thing in the world that they'll add 20 to 30 home runs as well. So, it's great to think they're going to be here for a long time."
Giants biggest signee Willy Adames makes his feelings known to play in Oracle Park from 2025
Willy Adames was formally signed on Dec. 12 in Oracle Park as he expressed his enthusiasm to turn up every day, much to the cheer of Giants fans, who he expects will have something to look forward to next season.
"There's no words to describe my feeling right now to be here in this beautiful city, I'm just so happy to be here," Adames said.
"This is a dream come true for me. I'm thrilled to be here. I'm so excited. Hopefully, we can win a few championships like you did, and that's one of the main reasons I'm here."
Willy Adames, who played 161 games (out of 162) last season, aims to do more with the Giants. Apart from winning games and helping the team make the postseason after three years, he also wants to inspire and guide the youth in the clubhouse.
"For me that comes first, it comes first to be a great human being. I've got to thank my parents for that, they raised me the right way, to try to treat everybody the same, it doesn't matter what you're doing," Adames said.
"I think that's something that I'm really proud of, just to be the same guy every day, to be kind, just to give love back to people because there's a lot of hate out there and I don't really like that."
The Giants will hope to land a star starting pitcher like Corbin Burnes this offseason to further bolster their roster.
