On Friday, the Los Angeles Dodgers signed Korean baseball star Hyeseong Kim on a three-year, $12.5 million deal. The young star who spent eight years in the KBO will now be inserted in what's already a stacked Dodger infield.
In an episode of "The Baseball Insiders" podcast, MLB analysts Robert Murray and Adam Weinrib broke down how Kim's signing might affect Gavin Lux's stay in Los Angeles with a potential trade to the Milwaukee Brewers.
"Willy Adames is no longer there," said Murray. Craig Counsell has long been a fan of Lux especially since the latter grew up in Wisconsin," he added. (5:38-5:50)
Murray elaborated that his take on the matter was just a hunch due to Lux being born and raised in Kenosha, Wisconsin. Weinrib, meanwhile, enumerated the infielders Dodgers have on their squad and stated that he was perplexed about Kim's signing.
"The plethora of infield talent in LA is enormous. Mookie Betts is scheduled to move back to the infield. Gavin Lux is still installed in second base. Max Muncy is starting at third base. Kike Hernandez is a free agent but he's an integral piece in the title run last season. Chris Taylor is still signed. I was confused to see the Dodgers in the bidding," said Weinrib. (3:39-4:05)
Weinrib made a good point regarding the infield situation in Los Angeles. The team is currently blessed with talent in the inner positions that even Gold Glover Tommy Edman was converted to an outfielder due to injuries on the team.
With the amount of star power that skipper Dave Roberts possesses in the middle infield roles, it would not be surprising if names such as Lux get traded ahead of the 2025 campaign.
KBO star Hyeseong Kim signs with the Dodgers
The Los Angeles Dodgers land the biggest fish from the Korean leagues in the form of Hyeseong Kim. The 25-year-old agreed to a three-year, $12.5 million deal with the reigning World Series winners.
Kim is adept at playing all infield positions and is a three-time KBO Golden Glove winner. He now joins an esteemed list of players with Korean roots that have donned the Dodger blue including Chan-ho Park, Hyun-jin Ryu, and most recently, Tommy Edman.
