The Houston Astros had a disappointing end to their 2024 campaign, and now their fans will have to contend with the departure of Kyle Tucker to the Chicago Cubs. The Astros traded away the All-Star outfielder to the Cubs in exchange for infielder Issac Paredes, right-handed pitcher Hayden Wesneski and infield prospect Cam Smith.

Many Astros supporters were left astounded by the news on social media, with a section of their fans calling for general manager Dana Brown to get sacked.

Kyle Tucker was selected by the Astros with the No. 5 overall pick in the 2015 MLB draft and has become an integral part of the team after making his debut three years later. He has made three straight All-Star teams and was among the top five finishers of the American League MVP race last year. Tucker enjoyed a superb start to the 2024 campaign but had to later spend a large chunk of the season on the IL.

The scathing comments continued pouring in on Instagram:

"This trade doesn't realy make any sense," one fan said.
"Houston got absolutely fleeced," a fan added.
"Horrible trade," another fan wrote.

Tucker is heading into his final year before he can become a free agent at the end of the 2025 season. At the same time, the Astros have already lost their third baseman, Alex Bregman, to free agency this year. Moving Tucker out of the roster should allow them the financial flexibility to re-sign Bregman, who has reportedly rejected an extension in the region of $155 million.

Following on from his stellar campaign last year, Kyle Tucker became an early candidate for the AL MVP, although the Houston Astros had to endure a disastrous start to the 2024 season. He had a .261/.389/.575 slash line and an OPS of .979 with 30 extra-base hits – including 19 home runs and 40 RBIs – when he was shifted to IL at the start of June due to a fractured right shin.

Tucker returned to the lineup for the final three weeks of the regular season and carried on his campaign from where he left off. He batted 23-63 with four home runs, nine RBIs and an OPS above 1.000 in September to help the Astros clinch the AL West.

The left-handed slugger had a poor postseason, however, as they were dumped out of the playoffs by the Detroit Tigers in the Wild Card Series.
