The Cleveland Guardians picked Oregon State Beavers second baseman Travis Bazzana with their first overall pick in the 2024 MLB Draft on Sunday. With this, the second baseman created history by becoming the first Australian player to be picked in the opening round of the MLB draft.

The second baseman is coming off a great college baseball career with Oregon State. He first enrolled in 2022 and hit .306/.425/.478 with six home runs and 44 RBIs in 63 games. Last year, he improved his slashline to .374/.500/.622 with 11 home runs, 55 RBIs and a school-record 36 stolen bases in 61 games.

"You guys actually did the right thing wtf I’m shocked," another added.
"Outstanding pick! Bazzana fits the Guardians culture perfectly!" another posted.

The reactions continued in support, with many already seeing him make his debut next year.

"This kid is one of the best college hitters I have ever seen. Cleveland got a good one," one fan commented.
"Oregon State again, huh? Can't blame 'em though, kid's got some serious pop in that bat. Wonder how he'll fare in the pros, but I'm sure the Indians are stoked to have him on board," another added.
"Great pick, go Guards," one fan wrote.

Travis Bazzana's reaction on being picked first overall by the Guardians

Sydney native Travis Bazzana was with his family and friends watching the draft go underway. Upon learning his first overall selection, Bazzana's mother was the most excited, as she jumped in enjoyment and soon the second baseman who was taking it all in joined her, hugged her and followed it up with a bear hug coming from his father.

The celebration was also attended by his friends and Oregon's supporters, who cherish knowing that Bazzana was able to fulfill his dream of getting into the majors.

Travis Bazzana, during his interview with Corvallis Knights manager Brooke Knight, mentioned that he wants to become a role model for young Australian baseball players trying to find their way in.

"I can provide resources, provide advice, and then just like be someone for kids to look up to. Be a position player that people can look up to and hopefully, people start to set their goals and expectations a little higher out of Australia," Bazzana said.

Now Bazzana will be hoping to soon pay dividends to the Guardians, who entrusted him with the first overall selection.
