New York Yankees fans turned against captain Aaron Judge after his costly error in a five-run inning for the Los Angeles Dodgers in Game 5 of the World Series on Wednesday.
It was Aaron Judge who opened the scoring for the Bronx Bombers at Yankee Stadium after a two-run home run in the first inning, his first World Series home run and the third this postseason.
However, Judge dropped a regulation catch in the top of the fifth, his first error of 2024 as the Dodgers got two runners on base, trailing 5-0 in the game. It proved to be a costly error as the Dodgers capitalized to score five runs after that error.
Although Judge wasn't the only player to blame as Anthony Volpe and Gerrit Cole also contributed to the defensive collapse in the fifth, Yankees fans blamed the AL MVP contender.
"THE YANKEES ARE GOING TO LOSE THE WORLD SERIES BECAUSE OF ONE MAN AND ONE MAN ONLY. AARON JUDGE."
"I could catch that with my bare hands," wrote another fan.
"Horrendous Mitts," lashed out a fan.
However , some fans rallied behind the Yankees captain.
"Let’s not act like he’s not the reason y’all even made it there in the first place lol," chimed in a fan backing Judge.
"Nah man Cole should cover that base… nice engagement bait though," a fan pointed towards Gerrit Cole's mistake.
Dodgers ahead after Aaron Judge's error in the fifth
Gerrit Cole pitched 6.2 innings for the Yankees with five runs, none of them earned. A horrendous defensive display in the fifth inning was the only blemish of his otherwise strong outing in Game 5.
The Yankees's lead was restored after Giancarlo Stanton's sacrifice fly in the bottom of the sixth. Stanton had helped the Yankees to a 5-0 lead after a solo home run in the third, his seventh of this year's postseason.
The Dodgers took the lead after Mookie Betts' sacrifice fly in the eighth inning as the game heads to an intense final few moments with the World Series on the line for the Yankees.
