The offseason appears to be far from over for the New York Yankees. After losing in the World Series last season and missing out on re-signing Juan Soto this offseason, the team's front office has wasted little time on rebuilding the roster. The club will enter next season as one of the favorites in the American League to reach the World Series.
Even though the Yankees have already added the likes of Paul Goldschmidt, Cody Bellinger, Max Fried and Devin Williams, it appears that the front office is not done yet. According to MLB insider Jon Heyman, the Bronx Bombers are exploring the infield market, with veteran Paul DeJong reportedly being one of the team's potential targets.
According to Heyman, the team is still looking to add to their infield this offseason and the 31-year-old All-Star could be the answer. DeJong is coming off one of his best seasons in recent years, posting a .227 batting average with 24 home runs, 56 RBIs and a .703 OPS in 139 games split between the Chicago White Sox and Kansas City Royals.
Although DeJong might not be the top name on the infield market, he has been a solid player throughout his MLB career. Last offseason, DeJong signed a one-year, $1,750,000 deal with the White Sox, which could be a similar price range yet again. DeJong may not be perfect. However, he could be a solid contributor, especially considering the price tag that he could come with.
Heyman also mentioned that the New York Yankees could explore the market for former Colorado Rockies infielder Brendan Rodgers. Rodgers also comes with his own flaws. However, he is a few years younger than DeJong, which could make him more of a long-term option for the Bronx Bombers.
New York Yankees have also been heavily linked to Luis Arraez this offseason
Even though the New York Yankees may ultimately end up bringing in a free-agent veteran like Paul DeJong or Brendan Rodgers, the team has also been linked to one of the best pure hitters, Luis Arraez.
The San Diego Padres have been looking to lower their payroll ahead of the new season, and Arraez could be part of that plan. The three-time batting champion is slated to make $14,000,000 in 2025 before becoming an unrestricted free agent at the end of the season. This could open the door to a move to New York for the veteran infielder.
It remains to be seen what kind of asking price the Padres might have for Arraez. However, the New York Yankees have a number of intriguing young players to help facilitate a deal. No matter which direction they go, the Bronx Bombers aren't done yet this offseason.
