On Sunday, New York Yankees skipper Aaron Boone gave an update on the fitness of first baseman Anthony Rizzo. After being hit by a pitch when the Yankees took on the Pittsburgh Pirates in their last regular season series, Rizzo sustained fractures to the fourth and fifth finger of his left hand. He has since been out of action.
As reported by MLB and New York Yankees insider Bryan Hoch on X, Boone has not completely ruled out Rizzo for the upcoming ALCS.
Naturally, the news was met with enthusiasm by New York fans. When fit, Rizzo has been a regular at first base, reliable on defense and capable at the plate. Having already won a World Series with the Chicago Cubs, he has the experience of playing in big games, which will be important in the Yankees' quest to go all the way this season.
However, Boone won't be in a rush to bring Rizzo back until he's 100%, with Oswaldo Cabrera and Jon Berti filling in well in his absence.
Yankees skipper Aaron Boone looking forward to atmosphere for ALCS opener
The New York Yankees have had a successful 2024 season so far. They have clinched the AL East division title despite a tough challenge from the Baltimore Orioles and beat the Kansas City Royals in the ALDS. They are set to face the Cleveland Guardians, who won the AL Central division by beating the Detroit Tigers in a thrilling series to make it to this stage.
Talking to the press on Saturday, Aaron Boone said he expects a vibrant atmosphere at Yankee Stadium as his team will play arguably its biggest game of the season so far.
"I'm sure Yankee Stadium's going to be rocking tomorrow night," Boone said. "Looks like cooler weather's moving in for these first two games, so it's going to have that October feel to it."
"We're now in the round playing for a chance to win a pennant and go to the World Series, so it's gonna be an awesome atmosphere."
This season, the Yankees have a 4-2 record against the Guardians. However, regular season records don't count at this point as two high-quality sides battle it out to make it to the World Series.
