New York Yankees ace Gerrit Cole is in the middle of his minor-league rehab assignment. He has already made one start, going 3.1 innings, giving up zero runs on two hits while striking out five batters.
The reigning American League Cy Young Award winner is looking to keep that train rolling and will do so this weekend. Per MLB insider Bryan Hoch, Cole is scheduled to get the ball on Sunday for the Double-A Somerset Patriots.
Cole has been sidelined since the start of the season with right arm nerve inflammation and edema. However, the hard-throwing righty has said he feels close to returning.
The club has not put an exact number on minor-league starts for Cole, so there is no telling when he could return. With how great the starting rotation has been so far, there is no reason to rush him back.
The Yankees have been just fine without Gerrit Cole in the rotation
While many teams would falter without their ace, that has not been the case for the New York Yankees. They have been rolling without Gerrit Cole in the rotation, compiling MLB's best record of 45-19.
Much of the team's success comes from the other arms in the starting rotation. The Bronx Bombers hold the best team ERA across the board at 2.81.
Pitchers like Carlos Rodon, Marcus Stroman, and Clarke Schmidt have been big. However, Luis Gil has really stepped it up for his squad, being named AL's Pitcher and Rookie of the Month in May.
With the rotation being dominant so far this summer, there is not a huge need to rush Cole back. He can take his time and stretch his arm out in the minor leagues before making his way back to the big leagues.
