First baseman Anthony Rizzo might be playing for a different organization come the 2025 season. Following the New York Yankees' loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 2024 World Series, a number of changes in personnel were anticipated, and it appears the process has already begun.
In November of 2022, Rizzo signed a two-year, $40 million contract with the Yankees, with a club option to continue for a third year in 2025. On Saturday, November 2, the New York Yankees announced via X that they had declined to go ahead with the extra year.
Following the announcement, several baseball fans took to the subreddit r/Baseball to share their reactions to the big news.
"The Yankees refusal to have a good first baseman is hilarious. Since (Mark) Teixiera it's been a bunch of randos and washed dudes."
"Thank you for everything Rizz. Sorry you had to go out on a low note."
A couple of fans wrote lengthy comments about Rizzo and wished him well.
"He was on track for a great year last season but was derailed by the mishandled concussion, and he still seemed mentally and physically diminished this year even before breaking his arm in June. Unfortunately if you look at his stats over his whole Yankee tenure they aren’t very good, and the Yanks need to economize in a lot of areas. Wishing him well." a fan shared
"Rizzo has always been a good guy; on and off the field, he’s been a leader in every organization and community he’s had the chance to be a part of. Can’t say anything bad of Rizzler. I wish him luck. Baseball is better with him," another fan added.
While numerous Yankees fans appeared to be sad to see the 35-year-old leave, some Chicago Cubs fans were looking at Rizzo's situation as an opportunity for a potential homecoming.
"Come back home baby. We missed you." a fan wrote.
"Come home sweet prince, we miss you." another fan posted.
Previously, Rizzo played for the Cubs from 2012-2021 and effectively went from a talented prospect to one of the best players in his position during his time in Chicago. The first baseman was also a key part of the Cubs' World Series-winning side in 2016.
Where next for Anthony Rizzo?
Anthony Rizzo did not have the best of seasons in 2024. At times he struggled for production at the plate, having to spend a large part of the season on the sidelines due to various injuries. He also made a costly error at a key juncture in Game 5 of the World Series.
However, the 35-year-old has heaps of experience in big games, and when on his game is one of the best in his position.
Heading into the 2025 season, Anthony Rizzo has a huge decision on his hands as to where he wants to play next. Many sides are likely to be interested in securing his services, some of which might suit him a lot better than others.
First and foremost, continuing with the New York Yankees is not out of the question if both parties are willing to agree on an alternative deal. Also, the Minnesota Twins and Houston Astros are both rumored to be looking for a fixture at first base, and Rizzo being released by the Yankees may have come at just the right time.
Anthony Rizzo finished the 2024 season with eight home runs and 35 RBIs while batting just .228 in 92 games.
