The comparison between Yankee star Aaron Judge and former Met Pete Alonso has always been a hot topic among fans of both New York teams. Since 2019, the two sluggers have hit the most home runs in the majors, with Judge leading Alonso 232 to 226.
On The Michael Kay Show, the famed Yankees sportscaster got heated with a fan and called him "moronic" after the fan shared several nuanced takes on Aaron Judge and Pete Alonso's valuation.
"Please stop! You're acting like he's the worst player of all-time, you're being moronic," Kay said (Timestamp: 21:31)
Tensions arose when the fan brought up Judge's spotty record in the postseason against powerhouse teams like the Houston Astros and the Los Angeles Dodgers.
The caller also said that Kay claimed Judge earned his big payday in the postseason, but Kay refuted this statement. He also shared his belief that Aaron Judge is a much better player than Juan Soto overall.
"But there are 162 games other than the postseason. Everybody seems to forget that. If a player and a team doesn't have a great season, they won't get to the postseason," he said.
The fan then proceeded to disregard Pete Alonso's performance in the Mets' regular season comeback last year. He claimed that Alonso's home runs were a non-factor. Kay then lambasted the fan for downplaying the first baseman's stellar play in 2024:
"You're saying that Alonso's not clutch because he only had 34 home runs in the regular season. But you're conveniently forgetting that the home run off Devin Williams against the Brewers, changes the whole perspective on the whole season. They won't get to the NLCS without that home run."
Michael Kay warns critics of Aaron Judge
Michael Kay continued with his tirade against the fan, warning those who discredit Aaron Judge's performance:
"For those that dismiss Judge because he hasn't done well in the postseason, I'm not trying to put lipstick on a pig. But Judge's home run against Cleveland's Emmanuel Clase was a humongous home run."
"In Game 5 of the World Series, all the people remember was him dropping the ball. That happens, it probably will never happen again in his career. He also had two walks, a double, and a home run. So everybody needs to take a deep breath."
"I would take Judge 100 years out of 100 years and I'll take my chances with him one day having a great postseason, just like Alex Rodriguez."
The broadcaster pointed out that even the great Alex Rodriguez struggled on the big stage, citing his non-factor performance from Game 5 of the 2004 ALCS against the Boston Red Sox until 2009.
However, A-Rod turned things around in the 2009 postseason, carrying the Yankees to their first World Series title in nine years with six playoff home runs.
