Time is against New York Mets slugger Pete Alonso. The two-time Home Run Derby champion and four-time All-Star's leverage in the free agency market has significantly dwindled compared to initial forecasts.

On the most recent episode of the titular The Michael Kay Show, the Yankees sportcaster predicted the contract to which Mets first baseman Pete Alonso should be signed for.

"The Mets can't bet against themselves. The offer that I'm predicting is a $75 million contract for three years," Kay said. (16:10 onwards)
"I know it's a risk that he might get insulted, but this is big business and big money. He should learn to get over it.

Kay cited the contracts given to Freddie Freeman when he transferred to the Dodgers and to Matt Olson when he went to Atlanta. Freeman signed a six-year, $162 million contract with L.A. that paid him around $27 million per annum.

Olson, meanwhile, was acquired by the Braves to replace Freeman, signing an eight-year, $168 million contract that will pay him $22 million until 2031.

"They should look at the market value for a first baseman," said Kay. "The Mets should discuss with Pete Alonso what Freddie Freeman and Matt Olson got on their deals. They shouldn't offer him a deal based on the hopes and dreams of his agent."

Michael Kay scrutinized Pete Alonso's camp for seemingly demanding exorbitant contract

In the aforementioned podcast, Michael Kay criticized Pete Alonso's camp for what seem to be an unreasonable AAV on his contract as the reason why the Mets haven't accepted the deal proposed by the player's camp.

"He's not a "sign him at any cost player," Kay said. "I think David Stearns knows it. I don't believe that Steve Cohen knows it. The fact that there is a report of a three-year offer on the table from Boras's side to the Mets and they haven't taken it tells you that the average annual value of the deal is probably ridiculous.
"Alonso's camp is probably looking for $40 million a year. Crazy! What first baseman gets that?"

There were reports that Scott Boras offered the New York Mets a three-year deal to re-sign Alonso. However, it lends credence to Kay's claim, as Boras usually signs his clients to long-term deals.

With less emphasis given to first basemen than other skill positions in this era of baseball, though, it will be interesting to see how Pete Alonso's contract saga concludes.
