Amid Pete Alonso's heightened free agency, the New York Mets have another option in Vladimir Guerrero to look forward to filling first base. The Toronto Blue Jays are entering the final year before he becomes a free agent. Many believe Guerrero could get a contract in the vicinity of around $400 to $500 million, but sportscaster Michael Kay said he's no Juan Soto.

Earlier this offseason, the Mets signed Soto to a record 15-year, $765 million deal. Kay believes Guerrero Jr. shouldn't be the one the Mets empty their pockets for as he gave his reasons for it.

"Everybody’s all in on Guerrero, but I’m not throwing huge amounts of dollars at him," Kay said on his show (12:10 onwards). "He’s had shape issues, in terms of coming into camp in shape. Last year, he was great; the year before, he was awful. He’s had an up-and-down career. He’s not the best first baseman in the world, and you don’t know what you’re going to get from him on a year-to-year basis.

"Would I take a run at him? Yeah, I would. Would I go crazy and empty the bank like I did for Soto? Absolutely not. That’s not that player. You can’t get too giddy."

MLB journalist drops a big report on Mets prepping an offer for Vladimir Guerrero Jr.

Vladimir Guerrero Jr. has put the Toronto Blue Jays on the clock so as to land an extension before spring training. While there has been no indication on whether the Blue Jays are looking to trade him, MLB insider Mike Rodriguez said that the Mets are putting together an offer to acquire the first baseman via trade.

"A source confirms to me that the #Mets are trying to put together a package to present to Toronto in exchange for Vladimir Guerrero Jr.," Rodriguez wrote.

If the report holds any truth to it, then there is a good chance that the Mets are not afraid to move on from their "Polar Bear," i.e. Pete Alonso. As for the Blue Jays, they likely won't trade him but who knows if the Mets offer them something irresistible.
