Among the many teams interested in trading for Jack Flaherty at the trade deadline were the New York Yankees, who even had a "preliminary" deal in place, only to pull out later. The Yankees wanted a starting pitcher and Flaherty was one of the options. However, upon checking his medical records, their interest in acquiring him faded, as per Th Athletic's Ken Rosenthal.
Instead, the Detroit Tigers hurler was traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers for a pair of prospects in Thayron Liranzo and Trey Sweeney.
Jack Flaherty has had lower back issues, which also resulted in him missing a start in the first week of July. He reportedly received two injections during the next three weeks and has made three starts since, during which he posted a 1.53 ERA in 17.2 innings.
“I can’t comment on medical stuff with trades,” Tigers president of baseball operations Scott Harris told reporters in Detroit. “You would have to ask the other teams. Jack is healthy. If we didn’t trade him, he was going to start for us on Thursday.”
The Yankees have had some success with respect to trade deadline acquisitions going to waste due to players' injuries. At the 2022 trade deadline, they acquired Frankie Montas, who had shoulder tightness before the trade. He ended up having surgery and could only pitch 41 innings for the Yankees.
Jack Flaherty was a childhood Dodgers fan; his mother posted a throwback photo
Jack Flaherty was born and brought up in Burbank, California, and was a Dodgers fan aspiring to play one day for the team. That dream will come true with the Dodgers trading for him to bring him back to California.
Upon the move, Flaherty's mother, Eileen Flaherty, posted a throwback photo of him from 1997, during his childhood, where he can be seen wearing the Dodgers cap.
"Circa 1997 …. Let’s Go!!!" his mother wrote in caption.
Jack Flaherty is one of the pitchers in contention for the Cy Young Award this season. He has a 7-5 record, a 2.95 ERA, a 0.96 WHIP, and 133 strikeouts in 106.2 innings.
