While the New York Yankees fell to a 4-2 defeat in Game 3 of the World Series, further misery was heaped upon New York fans as three other teams from the city also got defeated.

The New York Giants, New York Knicks and New York City FC all went down in their respective games on Monday evening in what turned out to be a nightmare night for sports fans. After reaching the MLB World Series for the first time after more than a decade, the Yankees have fallen to back-to-back defeats and are on the verge of getting swept by the Los Angeles Dodgers.

After one of their worst seasons ever in the MLB last year, the New York Yankees had a much improved performance in the regular season this year. After bolstering their roster with the likes of Juan Soto and Marcus Stroman, they finished the regular season on top of their division with a 94-68 record.

They went on to brush aside the Kansas City Royals and the Cleveland Guardians to set up a World Series with the Dodgers. However, they have struggled to keep up with their opponents from LA and are on the verge of getting swept in straight games.

Monday was not a good night for the rest of the New York-based sports teams either. The New York Giants fell to a 26-18 loss at the hands of the Pittsburgh Steelers in the NFL while the New York Knicks lost 110-104 to the Cleveland Cavaliers in the NBA. Moreover, their MLS team, New York City FC, also fell to a 1-0 defeat to FC Cincinnati.

Anthony Rizzo shares his empathy for Yankees fans after 15-year wait for the World Series

New York Yankees fans have had to wait 15 years to see their team make it to the World Series. For a team of their stature, it is a long time. Now that their team has finally made it to the biggest stage, it has been a disappointment, which is slowly turning into a nightmare.

Speaking to the media after the game, third baseman Anthony Rizzo said that he understands their frustration, being a childhood Yankee fan himself:

"I understand the fans, it's been a long time in the making. I grew up a Yankee fan, as well."

Having finally made it to the World Series, they have not been able to keep up with the Los Angeles Dodgers at all. Game 1 was a tight affair, but following that, the Yankees seem to have regressed. Now they are now on the verge of getting swept in front of their home fans on Tuesday.
