The Houston Astros lost a second consecutive game against the Baltimore Orioles to concede the series on Saturday. The Astros missed the presence of All-Star slugger Yordan Alvarez as the offense struggled in a low-scoring game.
Alvarez, who missed Friday's game due to neck discomfort, was maligned by the same issue ahead of the second game of the series against the Orioles. The team is missing Alvarez's offensive prowess having lost both games against the O's in his absence.
According to manager Joe Espada, the player missed Saturday's game due to the same neck pain, casting uncertainty over the presence of the former ALCS MVP's availability for Sunday's series finale.
Espada said:
"He’s still a bit uncomfortable in that area. He wasn’t available."
The 27-year-old has been one of the best hitters on the team this season despite an underwhelming start to the campaign. He has played 121 games so far hitting .306 with a .940 OPS, 25 home runs and 67 RBIs.
Astros' Yordan Alvarez reflects on his condition after suffering neck injury
Yordan Alvarez opened up about his condition following his neck injury. The three-time All-Star has been sidelined for the past two games, although the Astros haven't put him on the IL.
"I want to feel great. I don’t unfortunately. I woke up with some pain in my neck and it goes down a little bit to my scapula," Yordan Alvarez said.
Since returning from the All-Star break, the Astros have gone 19-14. They are competing for the top spot in their division with the Seattle Mariners. Alvarez's performance has been key for the team's resurgence in the second half of this regular season and they would surely hope to see him make a swift return to the lineup.
