The Boston Red Sox have been one of the most interesting teams to watch so far this offseason. Even though they have yet to add a significant piece to their lineup, they have done an admirable job at strengthening their pitching staff. The club has managed to bring in Garrett Crochet, Aroldis Chapman and Walker Buehler, addressing one of their biggest weaknesses.
If the Red Sox are looking to return to World Series contention, they are going to need to add a significant bat or two. One of the names that has been heavily linked to Boston has been two-time All-Star Alex Bregman.
The free agent third baseman could make a huge impact on the club's chances in 2025, and while it appears there is mutual interest, the two parties have yet to agree on a deal.
There is also a chance that the team could look ahead to next offseason as Vladimir Guerrero Jr. would become the next high-profile free agent. While signing either player could be a massive win for the Boston Red Sox, MLB analyst Jared Carrabis is wondering what's stopping the team from trying to sign them both.
"Yes, I’m excited about the idea of signing Vladdy Jr. next offseason, but what of the Red Sox behavior in the last five years would suggest they’d spend that money?" Carrabis tweeted on Tuesday. "And why does signing Vladdy mean you can’t sign Alex Bregman now? You’re the Boston Red Sox. You can afford both."
Boston's front office has been criticized for several years over its unwillingness to spend money on prized free agents or extend its superstars. While the club re-signed Rafael Devers to a long-term extension, they were unwilling to do so with Xander Bogaerts and Mookie Betts.
The team is owned by Fenway Sports Group, which also owns Liverpool Football Club and the Pittsburgh Penguins. It's clear that the group has the financials to get a massive deal for Bregman done; however, they need to step up and commit to fielding the best team possible in 2025.
The Boston Red Sox will need to sort Alex Bregman's defensive fit with the team if they were to sign him
Alex Bregman is a two-time World Series champion with the Houston Astros and is still in the prime of his career. If a team has the opportunity and the money to sign a player of his caliber, it should look to bring him into the fold.
There is still a chance that this might happen this offseason; however, if the Boston Red Sox do sign Bregman, they will need to figure out the team's infield alignment. Rafael Devers might need to shift to first base to get Bregman at third. Looking further ahead, they would need to adjust yet again if they can land Vladimir Guerrero Jr. next offseason.
