The San Diego Padres completed a series victory over the Washington Nationals after another hard-fought contest on Tuesday. But the second game of the series at Petco Park came with a fair share of dramatic moments.
Padres outfielder Jurickson Profar, who allegedly celebrated in front of the Nationals dugout after his walk-off hit in the series opener, was confronted by Nationals catcher Keibert Ruiz.
Ruiz instigated a conversation with Profar before his first at-bat at home plate and was seen putting his hands on Profar's shoulder. Ruiz's action did not sit well with Padres slugger Manny Machado, who rushed to home plate to send away Ruiz, leading to both benches clearing in the first inning.
Following his team's series victory, Profar stated that his celebration after the walk-off hit in the first game was directed towards the Padres fans in the stands and not the Nationals players. However, he said he didn't like Ruiz putting his hands on his shoulder.
"You can talk, but you can't touch," Profar said.
To Jurickson Profar's credit, the Padres star did not respond to Ruiz and largely remained calm while the benches cleared. Profar explained his reaction, stating that the team was already coping with the absence of Fernando Tatis Jr. and did not want himself to get ejected.
Jurickson Profar hails Manny Machado after dramatic series win
The drama didn't end with the benches clearing. Jurickson Profar was hit by a pitch after the game resumed, firing up the entire Padres team and the fans at Petco Park.
Seeing his teammate get struck by a pitch, Manny Machado fired back at the Nationals, smoking a two-run homer on the very next pitch to give his team an early lead. The crowd at Petco Park went delirious as Machado soaked in the applause and was greeted by a pumped Profar at first base.
“I loved it,” Profar said on Machado's home run. “It shows the things that we have in this clubhouse. We have a really good team, and we have each other's back.”
However, the visiting team found a way back into the game and took a two-run lead in the game after a four-run burst in the third inning. The lead exchanged hands once again as the Padres fought back with three runs in the fifth to make it 5-4.
The game was in the balance and it was Jurickson Profar, just like the series opener, who came clutch for San Diego. Profar got hold of Derek Law's fastball in the sixth for a grand slam to provide an exclamation mark to the game.
Profar's grand slam proved to be enough for the hosts as they held on for a 9-7 win. The budding rivalry will get its third installment on Wednesday with the Padres aiming for a series sweep.
