On Wednesday, the Athletics took to X/Twitter to announce that the organization had agreed to extend left fielder Brent Rooker's contract. Per reports, Rooker has signed a five-year, $60 million contract to keep him with the A's until 2029, with the organization also having the option of an extra season.
Rooker also later took to X himself, to talk about how excited he was to extend his stint with the Athletics:
"We’re building something exciting and I couldn’t be more excited to be a part of this organization for years to come," he said.
Many fans also took to X to share their reactions to the news. Though most fans were in agreement about Rooker's quality, many felt he perhaps deserved to be paid much more.
As the Athletics did not have the best of seasons in 2024, some fans thought Rooker may wish to consider a trade to a more competitive team in case the Athletics' fate does not improve much in 2025.
"Bro’s def getting traded 26/27 offseason watch," one fan said.
"Damn man I had a feeling you might end up a yank… happy for you but you deserve double that money brotha," another fan wrote.
"Brent with all due respect you just signed one of the most team friendly deals out there. You will be gone soon. For a hitter of your caliber on this deal. There will be teams foaming out the mouth for u," another fan posted.
"Well check back on this post in 2, 3 years tops," another fan shared.
"How long until you're an Atlanta Brave?" one fan commented.
"You got robbed bruh you’re an easy 100m on the open market," a fan wrote.
Brent Rooker looks to build on excellent 2024 season
Heading into the 2025 season, All-Star Brent Rooker will be looking to build on his excellent performances of 2024. Having signed a contract that keeps him under the Athletics' control for potentially the next six seasons, it appears the organization has also recognized him as one of the best players on the roster, and decided to build around him.
Rooker finished the 2024 regular season with a .293 batting average and .927 OPS, along with 39 home runs and 112 RBIs. With the rest of the offense struggling for consistency throughout the season, Rooker single-handedly won games for his team on several occasions last season. The 30-year-old subsequently won his first-ever Silver Slugger award.
Despite Rooker's best efforts, though, the Athletics' last season at the iconic Coliseum was one to forget, as they finished fourth in the AL West standings with a 69-93 record.
