Jordan Montgomery is back in the headlines, and this time it includes his former agent Scott Boras, who represented him in free agency last year. Montgomery, who signed a one-year, $25 million contract with the Arizona Diamondbacks, has struggled on the mound.
Montgomery has a 6.16 ERA in 20 games, pitching for 99.1 innings, making his worst record since 2019. However, he blames much of his struggles to his former agent, Boras. Montgomery claims that although the Boston Red Sox contacted him in free agency, a deal finalized, which he believes was due to Boras’ poor handling of his offseason negotiations.
“I had a Zoom call with (the Red Sox), that’s really all I know. It went good,” Montgomery said, per the Boston Herald. “I don’t know, obviously Boras kind of butchered it, so I’m just trying to move on from the offseason and try to forget it.”
The news went viral, with fans and experts discussing their opinions on the Jordan Montgomery vs Scott Boras case, including Peter Moylan, Eric Hosmer and Mike Moustakas. On the “Diggin’ Deep Podcast”, to lighten the mood, three-time All-Star Moustakas humorously quoted a famous dialogue by Jack Nicholson from “A Few Good Men (1992)”.
“You can’t handle the truth,” he said as others were getting eager to know the real story behind the beef. [20:47]
Meanwhile, the former major leaguer Moylan said:
“My understanding is that Montgomery wasn't very excited about how the offset season went as for his free agency and he said as much in the media this week.” [18:27]
Boras has presented several big-name clients, including Blake Snell and Cody Bellinger last year alone. Snell also missed his spring training due to delayed contract signing. However, he has a 3.56 ERA, representing the Giants, in 16 games with no complaint about his free agency.
What’s the future plan of Jordan Montgomery?
Jordan Montgomery’s dissatisfaction was evident when he fired Boras to sign with Wasserman’s Joel Wolfe and Nick Chanock in April. While D-backs are most likely to get into the postseason with their 76-59 record, Montgomery might part ways with the club when the season ends.
During the last offseason, he had huge demands, from teams like the New York Yankees and Texas Rangers, but he waited and missed the spring training in the process as well. This time, he might avoid waiting and get a better deal.
