All-Star slugger Pete Alonso's search for a new team continues with Spring Training looming. The former New York Mets star has been linked to a return to Citi Field in free agency but a potential deal seems to be in a standoff.
Despite his impressive record in the previous seasons, all with the Mets, Alonso is finding it difficult to find a suitor as the former Rookie of the Year is reportedly seeking a long-term contract with an annual salary in excess of $23,000,000.
However, the Mets, owned by Steve Cohen, are reluctant to meet Alonso and his agent Scott Boras' demands despite splashing $765,000,000 on Juan Soto earlier this offseason.
Mets sportscaster Evan Roberts explored a potential solution to the standoff, urging Alonso to resign, with Soto Francisco Lindor and Mark Vientos in the lineup for the Mets.
He said on WFAN's "Rico Brogna" podcast (10:50 onwards):
"He has a better chance to have a big year in another contract here with the New York Mets than he does anywhere else. You are now in a lineup with Juan Soto, Francisco Lindor and Martin Vientos coming off a big year and more than even all that stuff. The lineup you're familiar with, the locker room you're familiar with, the city you're familiar with, the stadium you're familiar with your living arrangements."
A pillow contract could benifit Pete Alonso and the Mets
Pete Alonso remains one of the biggest bats available in free agency along with Alex Bregman, who is also represented by Scott Boras. According to Evan Roberts, Boras will try to get the best contract for their clients even it means remaining without a team during Spring Training.
However, Roberts feels that Pete Alonso's camp could opt for a pillow contract as it would cater to both parties negotiating a deal. A big year for Alonso with the Mets could see him earn a lucrative contract after the 2025 season.
He said:
"When you know you have to settle for a pillow contract, you want to put your client in the best position to have a big year so that when they have a big year and they opt out you get him the most money."
The Mets have been one of the most active teams in the offseason with Soto's signing being the highlight. Steve Cohen's team are looking to build on their ALCS run last season.
