Oakland Athletics owner John Fisher released a statement on Monday thanking the team's fans and providing an explanation for the impending relocation. The Athletics are bound for a Las Vegas move, with some bumps along the way in terms of a short-term home, and Fisher's letter didn't sit well with one local reporter.
ABC anchor Larry Beil pointed out that the final games against the New York Yankees in Oakland brought out huge crowds. It was emotional and the A's lost all three games, but many fans came to support their team.
The reporter also added that the final series in Oakland begins this week against the Texas Rangers. The final game on Thursday, which is a noon game, is sold out.
He ripped into the owner's statement:
"John, you tried five different extremely flawed stadium proposals. You never got even close to a shovel in the ground! Yes, Oakland politics is often a mess. I will give you that. But John, you surround yourself with incompetent 'yes' men."
Beil added that because Fisher was born into a billionaire family, he might not know that making money often requires spending it. Beil cited Joe Lacob and the Golden State Warriors before taking a dig at the owner:
"John, you’re a serial penny pincher. You’ve destroyed your family’s great name and legacy because of your cheapness!"
Beil also took issue with Fisher claiming that he wishes he could speak to each and every Athletics fan. The reporter said that the network has been trying to interview Fisher for years but he's been absent.
John Fisher writes to fans ahead of final Oakland games
The Oakland Athletics have just three games left in Oakland. They will then spend three years in a minor-league park in Sacramento before moving to Las Vegas. The entire saga has upset fans, and Fisher tried to appease them with a letter.
He said that he tried to make things work and even pursued five different options within the Bay Area to no avail. Fisher claimed that the A's spent 16 years working on developing a new home locally before they were forced by a "binding agreement" to find a new home by 2024.
