Yuli Gurriel penned down a touching message for the Houston Astros loyalists as he departs for the Miami Marlins before the regular season. Gurriel was with the Astros for the last seven years, turning out to be quite the fan favorite during that time.
The 38-year-old veteran is a two-time World Series champion with the Houston Astros. Proving to be a regular at first base for the Astros, Yuli Gurriel will look to cover up for All-Star talent Garrett Cooper, who is the only other first baseman on Miami's 40-man roster.
Despite his mediocre 2022 season, Yuli Gurriel had proven himself in both offense and defense in 2021, which saw him win an American League Batting title and a Gold Glove award. Overall in his seven seasons at the club, Gurriel hit .284 with 94 home runs and 435 RBIs.
"To the City of Houston and all the Astros’ fans around the world… THANK YOU, from the bottom of my heart. I appreciate you more than you’ll ever know. You welcomed my family with kindness and warmth. Your constant support inspired my teammates and I every single day. Together, we celebrated two World Championships!"
"To my teammates, I could have never imagined how amazing the past seven years of my life were going to be. I am forever grateful and love each and every one of you. WE ARE FAMILIA. I am so blessed!" Gurriel wrote via Instagram.
After the Astros brought in former National League MVP Jose Abreu to play first base, it seemed like Gurriel had to look for other places where he could have more game time. He was in constant chatter with the Miami Marlins throughout the offseason, but the final deal just didn't seem to materialize until recently.
Yuli Gurriel to add more depth to the Miami Marlins offense
The Miami Marlins started the offseason in need of players who could add depth to their lineup and players who have tasted success in the past. Yuli Gurriel fit in perfectly for them. The Marlins lineup has already gone through a major overhaul after a disappointing campaign last season. They signed veteran free agent Jean Segura and acquired American League batting champ Luis Arraez. Gurriel will only add to the talent and experience on that roster.
Details of his contract weren't made public recently, but reports suggested that the Marlins had offered him a $3 million contract earlier in the offseason. It will be exciting to see how Gurriel adapts to the change.
