Long-time veteran pitcher Zack Greinke, 39, continues to demonstrate that age is just a number. There isn't much the star pitcher hasn't accomplished in his 20th season in the majors. While he may no longer be the player he once was, the former Cy Young Award winner will return for another season after signing a one-year contract with the Kansas City Royals.
"Zack Greinke gets full no trade on Royals deal. Here’s the rest: $8.5M guarantee. Plus: $450,000 each for 90ip; 95ip; 100ip; 105ip; 110ip; 115ip; 120ip; 125ip; 130ip; 135ip. $300,000 each for 140ip; 145ip; 150ip; 155ip; 160ip; 165ip; 170ip; 175ip; 180ip; 185ip" MLB insider Jon Heyman tweeted.
Greinke's deal with the Royals will see him paid $8.5 million guaranteed, as well as a full no-trade clause. The deal also contains several incentives based on innings. From 90 to 135 innings, Greinke will receive $450,000 for every five innings pitched. He will receive $300,000 for every five innings pitched from then on.
The lucrative deal will continue to grow his already impressive career earnings. Over his MLB career, Greinke has made an estimated $330,003,000.
A look at Zack Greinke's career in the MLB
Drafted by the Kansas City Royals with the sixth overall pick in 2002, Greinke made his way around the league with stops with the Milwaukee Brewers, Los Angeles Angels, Los Angeles Dodgers, Arizona Diamondbacks and Houston Astros before returning to the Royals.
"Future #Royals hall of famer Zack Greinke is coming back to KC. He's set to enter his 20th season in the major leagues. From '22: "Enjoyed the season a lot. Love the guys here. Great with my kids. Treat the family good. We like the city. Lot of good things in Kansas City," Jared Koller tweeted.
Throughout his career, he has been selected to the All-Star team six times, as well as winning the Gold Glove for pitchers on six different occasions.
In 2009, Zack Greinke won his first and only Cy Young Award with the Kansas City Royals. He finished the season with an impressive 2.16 ERA over 229.1 innings. Greinke also racked up 242 strikeouts during his award-winning season.
While he may one day find himself in the Hall of Fame, Greinke has been a notoriously low-key guy who tends to remain out of the limelight.
