Nick Martinez had a great year with the Cincinnati Reds in 2024. The hard-throwing righty had a career year, starting 16 games and holding a 3.10 ERA over 142.1 innings.
He is rated one of the top pitchers on the free-agent market after his impressive season.
Here's a closer look at three possible destinations for the Fordham University product.
3 potential landing spots for Nick Martinez
#1. Cincinnati Reds
The Cincinnati Reds presented Nick Martinez with a qualifying offer. Many insiders believe he will accept it, bringing him back to a rotation that has a ton of potential.
#2. Detroit Tigers
The Detroit Tigers will be a team looking for starting pitchers this winter. MLB insider Jim Bowden has linked Detroit as an ideal fit for Martinez as they look to carry their postseason momentum into next season.
Bowden predicts Martinez could land a three-year deal, and Detroit has the money to swing that. However, with the season he just had, they will not be the only team trying to sign him.
#3. Boston Red Sox
The Boston Red Sox are another team Bowden feels could be an ideal fit. As a starter and with experience coming out of the bullpen, Martinez could be the solution in either area.
Boston is expected to be one of the more active teams this offseason. They need all the help they can get playing in a division as tough as the American League East is. For a team rich in history, they have missed the playoffs three seasons in a row.
However, Martinez will not be Boston's priority. They desperately want to sign Juan Soto this offseason, making him their top target. The club is expected to meet with him and his agent Scott Boras this week.
