It may be time for the St. Louis Cardinals to commit to the rebuild, pulling the plug on Nolan Arenado and others. The veteran third baseman is not quite playing up to his lofty standards, but he's still playing excellent defense and has a capable bat. Teams would jump to add him.
Since the Cardinals are likely not going anywhere anytime soon, it is a good idea to trade off the veteran players. That means the Arenado experiment, and potentially the Paul Goldschmidt run, should come to an end. If so, here's which teams could be interested:
Where can Nolan Arenado end up this season?
3) Los Angeles Dodgers
How much help could the Los Angeles Dodgers need? The only hole they really have is at third base. Max Muncy has been good, but they rank 16th in baseball at third base depth, according to Fangraphs.
A team bent on winning it all this year isn't going to want to let that remain so. Adding Arenado would help what has been a disappointing infield defense and add yet another potent bat. Perhaps this trade is what's needed to put them over the edge.
2) Seattle Mariners
The Seattle Mariners have gotten off to a good start, but it's only a matter of time before the Texas Rangers and maybe even the Houston Astros get going. Third base has been a position of need for the Mariners since they traded away Eugenio Suarez, and it's not getting much better any time soon.
Adding Nolan Arenado would boost their offense and infield defense, cementing them as the team to beat in the AL West. This would also help them get back to the playoffs after missing out last year.
1) New York Yankees
The New York Yankees have been using Jon Berti and Oswaldo Cabrera at third base while they await DJ LeMahiue's return. If he comes back and is healthy and a lethal hitter again, then all is well. If not (and this is more likely), then third base will still remain a position of need for the Yankees.
Who better to grab than perhaps the best defender at the hot corner and a more than capable bat at a discount thanks to his slightly down start to the season? Arenado would fit perfectly in the Bronx.
