The San Diego Padres are in need of a new manager again and Ryan Flaherty, their current bench coach and offensive coordinator, is a prime candidate. After losing their leader this offseason, the star-studded Padres are a rudderless ship once again. The expectation is that they'll promote from within and that leaves two prime options.
Ryan Flaherty is the first choice. He's worked with their hitters plenty and knows their roster and its capabilities. He is also very young, which means he could stick around for a long time if all goes well.
The alternative option is another assistant, Mike Shildt. He is currently the team's senior adviser for player development, and he is a former Manager of the Year winner with the St. Louis Cardinals.
One of those options is much better in the eyes of the fan base. Flaherty would be disastrous from their perspective, which is why they pessimistically expect that to be the hire. Others are really hoping for Shildt to get the job.
Flaherty represents the new age thinking. Older managers are out, and younger, more relatable managers are in. With a few exceptions, such as the now Giants manager Bob Melvin who left San Diego, the leadership position is getting much younger.
Fans do not want Ryan Flaherty in charge for San Diego Padres
Mike Shildt had recent success in St. Louis, taking them to the playoffs and doing generally pretty well. The Padres have been underwhelming in 2023 coming off a season in which they stunned the world by making it to the NLCS.
They may need a manager with some experience to guide them, at least according to the fans. If they're going to promote from within and not go outside the organization, it's safe to say that one of the options would be far more palatable to fans than the other.
Ryan Flaherty is an assistant coach without a lot of experience. When a team this good is this underperforming, the manager often gets blamed. Fans certainly don't think the aforementioned asisstant is going to be the one to turn them around.
