The Pittsburgh Pirates are amongst one of the oldest teams in Major League Baseball (MLB) at present. The team was originally formed as the Pittsburgh Alleghenies in 1882 as a member of the American Association. However, the team joined the National League (NL) in 1887 and kept the name till 1980. Interestingly, they rebranded themselves as the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1981 and have kept the name since. Meanwhile, they were part of the NL East Division from 1969-1993 before switching to the NL Central Division in 1994.
Talking about titles, the Pittsburgh Pirates have won the World series five times, nine National League (NL) titles and nine NL East Division titles. However, they are yet to win an NL central Division title. Notably, they have achieved an overall record of 10792-10766 throughout 143 seasons of their existence (1882 to 2024).
