A native of Carbondale, Illinois, United States, Derek Lee Shelton began his baseball career at Warren Township High School before playing college baseball at Southern Illinois University for the Southern Illinois Salukis. Notably, he also made the minor leagues with the Oneonta Yankees and the Greensboro Hornets in the 1992 and 1993 seasons respectively. Unfortunately, he suffered an elbow injury and had to call quits on his career as a baseball player.
Moving on, Derek Shelton turned his attention to coaching and managing minor league baseball teams like the GCL Yankees in 1997, the Greensboro Bats in 1998 and Tampa Yankees in 1999. Remarkably, he also managed the GCL Yankees for two seasons before leading the Staten Island Yankees to a New York-Penn League in 2002. From 2003 to 2009, he was associated with the Cleveland Indians in various roles as their minor league hitting coordinator, interim hitting coach and hitting coach throughout his tenure with the team. Later on, he served as the hitting coach for the Tampa Bay Rays between 2010 and 2016. The subsequent seasons saw him serve as the quality control coach of the Toronto Blue Jays and as the beach coach for the Minnesota Twins. Interestingly, all this led to Shelton finally being chosen as the manager of the Pittsburgh Pirates from the 2020 season.

Derek Shelton is the son of Ron Shelton and Kathy Shelton. Ron Shelton is a former minor league baseball player who served as a pitcher for the Bluefield Orioles for two seasons. However, he later a returned to Illinois and became a teacher, baseball coach and eventually the principal of Warren Township High School in Gurnee, Illinois, United States. Moving forward, he stated that he always wanted to be a coach more than a player. Moreover, he revealed (via mlb.com) that coaching his two sons Derek and Craig were the best eight years of his life. One of his players, Robinson Cano (World Series champion in 2009, eight-time MLB All-Star, five-time Silver Slugger Award and two-time Gold Glove Award winner) later even gifted him with an autographed jersey with the same inscription. On the other hand, Kathy Shelton worked as a teacher.
