As a manager, the 2024 season is Derek Lee Shelton's fifth consecutive season managing the Pittsburgh Pirates in Major League Baseball (MLB). Nonetheless, he formerly played baseball at Warren Township High School, Southern Illinois University and in the minor league for two years before an elbow surgery forced to him bring an end to his career as a player. Instead, he focused on coaching and managing by starting with minor league teams and making his way up to the Cleveland Indians in 2002 as minor league hitting coordinator and was later promoted as the interim hitting coach in 2005 before taking up that role on a full-time basis.

Between 2010 and 2018, Shelton served as the hitting and quality control coach of the Tampa Bay Rays while also having a stint as the bench coach of the Minnesota Twins in 2018. Notably, he landed his first managerial job in the MLB with the Pittsburgh Pirates hiring him before the 2020 season commenced. Prior to that, he had the minor league teams under the Yankees organization and managed the Staten Island Yankees to a New York-Penn League Championship in 2002.
