A veteran of the baseball world, Derek Shelton played baseball in high school and college, followed by two minor league seasons in 1992 and 1993. However, his career as a baseball player was cut short due to an elbow surgery. Later on, he moved on into coaching and managing in 1997, starting with minor league teams before being associated with the Cleveland Indians as their minor league hitting co-ordinator, interim hitting coach and hitting coach between 2003 and 2009. Shelton then reprised his role as the hitting coach with the Tampa Bay Rays between 2010 and 2016 before moving on to become the quality control coach for the Toronto Blue Jays in 2017 and the bench coach for the Minnesota Twins in 2018. He embarked upon his managerial role with the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2020, after being chosen for the same in 2019.
