Second base isn't as stacked a position as some in the MLB, but there is still a ton of talent there. Some future Hall of Famers will roam the position in 2025, as will a couple of possible MVP candidates. Here are the best of the best heading into this next season.
Best 2B in MLB right now
10) Gleyber Torres
Gleyber Torres had two-thirds of an awful season with the New York Yankees. When he moved to the leadoff spot, he played like one of the best second basemen in baseball. That includes the playoffs, where he was red-hot. The Detroit Tigers added a good player.
9) Bryson Stott
Perhaps a forgotten member of the Philadelphia Phillies, Bryson Stott is one of the best second basemen in the MLB. The Phillies star had the 11th-most fWAR last year among all second basemen, and the future is bright.
8) Brice Turang
Brice Turang broke out in 2024, posting 2.5 fWAR. That was the ninth-most of anyone who played a game at second base, so the Milwaukee Brewers have one of the strongest second basemen in baseball.
7) Andres Gimenez
Andres Gimenez isn't a great hitter, but there probably isn't a better defender at second base. Moving to the Toronto Blue Jays might spark some better offensive production, but he's still easily one of the better players at his position thanks to his epic defense.
6) Jose Altuve
Jose Altuve had the third-most fWAR by a second baseman last year. Even with some age-related regression and more poor defense overall expected, the Houston Astros star will still be one of the best at second base.
5) Jonathan India
A change of scenery might do Jonathan India, who still had the seventh-most fWAR of anyone who played second base at all last year, a bit of good. Plus, he'll be hitting after Bobby Witt Jr., which can only help production.
4) Luis Garcia Jr.
The Washington Nationals got 3.1 fWAR from Luis Garcia Jr. in his age-24 season. The future is bright, as Garcia was good all-around with a 0.6 BsR (baserunning), 7.4 offensive rating and 4.6 defensive rating.
3) Nico Hoerner
Nico Hoerner had 3.9 fWAR in 2024. He was one of the best all-around second basemen in the sport with 5.0 BsR, 7.3 offensive rating and 9.4 defensive rating for a 3.9 fWAR overall.
2) Marcus Semien
Marcus Semien made the All-Star Game when his OPS was below .700. He eventually rebounded. He recorded 4.2 fWAR, second-most at the position, in what was a down year overall, so he's still one of the best.
1) Ketel Marte
Ketel Marte led all second basemen with 6.3 fWAR, among the league leaders and 2.1 better than the next-best second baseman. The Arizona Diamondbacks star remains the best at his spot.
