Philadelphia Phillies first baseman Rhys Hoskins is facing a devastating setback as he will likely miss the entire 2023 season due to a torn ACL in his left knee. Hoskins was injured in the second inning of Thursday’s spring training game against the Detroit Tigers, as he backpedaled to field a ground ball and then fell awkwardly on his left leg.

The Phillies announced that Hoskins will require surgery for the injury, specifically an ACL reconstruction. The 30-year-old first baseman had just recovered from meniscus surgery on his right knee earlier in the offseason and had been preparing for a crucial year as he approaches free agency after the season.

Hoskins has been an important player for the Phillies since making his debut with the team in 2017, ranking among baseball’s most productive hitters with 148 home runs and 405 RBIs.

What is coming for the Phillies following Rhys Hoskins injury?

In Rhys Hoskins’ absence, the Phillies are expected to turn to Darick Hall as the primary first baseman, particularly against right-handed pitching. Hall played well for the team last season as a designated hitter, batting .250 with nine home runs and 16 RBIs in 142 plate appearances. He has also been hitting well in spring training, with a .319 batting average and five home runs.

The Phillies will also have to consider their options for the bench, as Hoskins’ injury opens up competition for two roster spots. Among the candidates are Scott Kingery, Dalton Guthrie, Jake Cave, and Kody Clemens.

“Our club finds a way to pick up the pieces and move forward [...] That's what we did last year. And we'll continue to do that.”

While the loss of Rhys Hoskins is a major setback for the Phillies, the team remains optimistic about their chances this season. Manager Rob Thomson emphasized the importance of moving forward and relying on the team’s depth to fill the gap left by Hoskins.
