Robert Lewis Thomson, also known by his nickname “Topper” is a former coach turned manager for the Philadelphia Phillies in Major League Baseball (MLB). He started his MLB career as a catcher for the Detroit Tigers from 1985 to 1988. He also played in the minor league team Oneonta Yankees in his career.

Hailing from Sarnia, Ontario, Canada, Thomson started his post-playing career as a coach. He was initially the New York Yankees’ bench coach in 2008, then became their third base coach from 2009 to 2014, and again served as a bench coach from 2015 to 2017. Moreover, he won the World Series title as a coach in 2009. He started coaching the Philadelphia Phillies as their bench coach from 2018-2022. Under his guidance, the team gained wild card berths in 2022 and 2023. They also achieved their 8th NL pennant in 2022. After the 2022 season, he was promoted to be the manager of the Philadelphia Phillies and is still serving in the role.
