It has been a tough season for the Chicago Cubs this year. Manager Craig Counsell has had to deal with injuries to top players, an inconsistent offense, and until recently, a lackluster bullpen.
They are 61-64, putting them 11.5 games behind the NL Central-leading Milwaukee Brewers. While they still have time to close the gap or fight for a Wild Card spot, many are already looking toward next year.
The Cubbies could use a few upgrades, but one in particular is starting to gain traction. In a recent episode of "670 The Score", Bruce Levine said they could consider Corbin Burnes (via FanSided's Christopher Kline):
"I am in the same category, that is ... The Cubs, do they need [Juan] Soto? Do they need [Corbin] Burnes? Do they need to spend another $50 or $60M a year in payroll next year? That's not up to me and you to decide, Mike. But Burnes will be available," Levine said.
He went as far as to say that he believes Burnes will be Chicago's top choice when free agency rolls along:
"I think he'll be their No. 1 guy that they'll be looking for next year as far as a free agent. Again, the old adage is 'If you need more hitting, go and get yourself the best pitcher in baseball, okay?' Because it's still the game. And I think the Cubs will be players for Burnes," he added.
Do not count out the Cubs yet this season
Craig Counsell and the Cubs have their eyes set on fighting for a postseason spot this year. They are not too worried about next season just yet when they are only 5.5 games back from a Wild Card spot.
One of the reasons for them still being in the fight is how their bullpen has turned things around. After being the problem for the club, they hold the lowest bullpen ERA in MLB since June 27, as per Marquee Sports Network.
It is not just all about the bullpen arms, Cody Bellinger has also been a big reason for the team's recent success. He has been on a roll since coming off the IL and is hitting .273/.333/.426 this year.
While still in August, there is plenty of time for the Cubbies to continue to fight. They have a few series against lesser teams to finish the month they need to take advantage of.
