Less than a week remains until the MLB trade deadline. There has not been much activity this year, as several teams remain in contention for a playoff berth. However, several deals have already taken place and plenty more are expected.
Several teams are using it to fill their weaknesses ahead of the second-half stretch, while others will look to trade away stars and inherit top prospects to build upon. Let's take a look at the latest happenings in the trade market:
#1. Yankees interested in signing Jonathan India
The New York Yankees are in a massive slump and clearly need greater offensive production from their lineup to get out of their rut. The production from their infield has been under par, as almost all are below .260 and have OPS+ under 100.
Meanwhile, Jonathan India, whom the Yankees are reportedly interested in, is enjoying the best season of his career, slashing .275/.377/.420 with 21 doubles, eight home runs, and an OPS+ of 122.
The 27-year-old second baseman has another year left until free agency, so the Cincinnati Reds could demand a couple of young pitchers and a prospect or two if they decide to sell.
#2. Jameson Taillon linked with the Red Sox
The Chicago Cubs will likely be sellers at this trade deadline and Jameson Taillon is likely to be in high demand. Taillon has a 7-5 record for the season with a 2.96 ERA across 100.1 innings.
The Boston Red Sox are reportedly interested in signing the 32-year-old right-hander to add a third solid starting pitcher alongside Tanner Houck and Cutter Krawford. Taillon has two more years left on his contract at $18 million per year, so he will be a fairly expensive acquisition.
#3. Red Sox are also on the hunt for Cal Quantrill
The Red Sox's chief baseball officer, Craig Breslow, seems to be interested in starting pitchers ahead of the trade deadline.
Cal Quantrill has been the best pitcher in the Rockies rotation this year after being DFA'd by the Cleveland Guardians last season. The 29-year-old has a 7-7 record with a 4.09 ERA, and he is up for salary arbitration at the end of the season, so he will be an inexpensive addition.
#4. Phillies looking to bolster bullpen by adding Tanner Scott
The Philadelphia Phillies have been the best team this season, but they are still looking to add another piece to their roster. The bullpen has been surprisingly good thus far and adding a reputed closer would solidify the team even further.
High-leverage relievers are always in demand at the trade deadline, so the Miami Marlins should cash in by trading Tanner Scott. The 29-year-old lefty was the lone All-Star for the Marlins this season, and he has earned 18 saves this season with a 1.21 ERA and 10.1 strikeouts per nine innings.
#5. Brent Rooker is on the radar for the injury-stricken Braves
The Atlanta Braves were the preseason favorites to win the World Series this year, but they are battling hard to earn a wildcard berth at the trade deadline. The Braves lineup has been ravaged by injuries this season, and they will probably have to bring a slugging outfielder to improve their offensive production.
Brent Rooker is reportedly a trade target for many teams at the moment, but the Athletics may be unwilling to trade him as he will be heading for arbitration next year.
Rooker was an All-Star last year but was snubbed despite having even better numbers this year. Right now, the 29-year-old has a .291/.370/.578 slashline with 19 doubles, 23 home runs and 169 OPS+.
