New York Mets star Pete Alonso is expected to be a target for several teams during this trade deadline. As per a report from MLB insider Jim Bowden, the Houston Astros are the latest team to show serious interest in acquiring Alonso.
According to Bowden, the Astros have made contact with the Mets to enquire about the availability of the first baseman for a trade move.
Pete Alonso is serving the final year of his contract with the Mets. He has not been offered an extension yet, so he may be a free agent in 2025.
Despite being named to the All-Star team, Alonso has not been at his best this season. He has a .240/.320/.454 slashline with 18 HRs. The Mets were unlikely to reach the postseason a couple of months ago, and it was expected that Alonso would get traded at the deadline.
The Houston Astros also had a woeful start to the season, which was mirrored by the struggles of Jose Abreu. The former MVP hit just .124/.167/.195 before he was released by the team. The Astros have bounced back strongly since then and seem destined for the playoffs yet again. Nevertheless, a power-hitting first-baseman like Pete Alonso will add a lot of depth to that position in the short term.
It remains to be seen how the Mets decide to approach any trade situation concerning Alonso. Even though there are only a few months remaining on the contract, he should still bring a decent haul of prospects.
On the other hand, the Mets are within touching distance of a wildcard spot, and selling their biggest slugger at this stage may anger their fans. Therefore, it all depends on how the team performs between now and the end of the month.
Pete Alonso unlikely to be in Mets uniform beyond 2024
Even though he is a huge favorite among the fans, it's looking uncertain whether the New York Mets will keep Pete Alonso beyond the end of the year. Besides being in trade talks, Alonso is also a Scott Boras client and is almost certain to opt for free agency in the offseason.
Meanwhile, the ownership has invested a great deal over the past few years to win a championship, but the team has not really come close to it. The Mets have had the highest payroll in the MLB for the past two years, and offering a bumper deal to Alonso will seriously affect its finances in the future.
For now, the Mets front office is likely to keep hold of Pete Alonso and see what the team is able to achieve this year.
