Speculation over the future of Pete Alonso will intensify over the coming weeks as the 2024 MLB season draws nearer to the trade deadline. According to MLB insider Bob Nightengale, the New York Mets will move Alonso out if the team falls out of playoff contention before July 31. Nightengale offered his view on the situation in his column for USA Today on Sunday.

Pete Alonso is a three-time All-Star who's in his sixth year in the major leagues. He was named the Rookie of the Year in 2019 after hitting 53 home runs during his debut season.

Alonso has recovered from a slow start to 2024, but his stats are still subpar, with a .243/.325/.467 slashline and OPS under .800. Nevertheless, he remains the most feared slugger on the team, with 18 home runs.

Although Pete Alonso is an integral part of the Mets' batting lineup, the team could look to move him out during this trade deadline. Alonso is in the final year of his contract, so he could be swapped in return for some prospects who could reshape the team in the near future.

"It (the trade deadline) also lacks star power unless three-time Cy Young winner Max Scherzer is traded by the Texas Rangers, or New York Mets first baseman Pete Alonso or Chicago Cubs center fielder Cody Bellinger are moved. And Alonso is staying as long as the Mets remain in the wild-card race," Nightengale wrote.

However, that situation will only arise if the New York Mets fall completely out of the playoff race.

The Mets have had a topsy-turvy season but still have a chance of playing in the postseason following their resurgence over the past month. With a 43-44 record, they are just two and a half games behind the final wildcard spot in the National League.

Even if Pete Alonso doesn't get traded by the New York Mets before the trade deadline, it's becoming increasingly unlikely that he will be wearing the same uniform in 2025.

The Mets will likely not match the offers from other teams when Alonso becomes a free agent at the end of the season. It has the highest payroll in the MLB for the past couple of years, but the returns until now have been nowhere close to expectations. Therefore, the main focus of the front office will be to bring the wage bill down and rebuild the team with younger players.

Meanwhile, Alonso is represented by Scott Boras, whose clients usually sign bumper deals when they reach free agency. Although 2024 was not a great year for his clients, the demand for an elite power-hitting slugger like Alonso will always be high.
