As the MLB offseason goes on, rumors surrounding Seiya Suzuki have gained attention, particularly with the LA Dodgers expressing interest in the Chicago Cubs outfielder.
However, the Cubs appear reluctant to trade Suzuki, even after their recent acquisition of Kyle Tucker from the Houston Astros. This development raises questions about Suzuki's future with the Cubs and the potential impact on the Dodgers as they are reportedly looking to replace Teoscar Hernández.
Suzuki, who signed a five-year $85 million contract with the Cubs before the 2022 season, has proven to be a valuable asset. Over three seasons in MLB, he has a .824 OPS.
His consistent performance at the plate makes him a good option for teams looking for a right-handed batter. The Dodgers, facing uncertainty with Hernández potentially leaving in free agency, have shown interest in Suzuki as a possible replacement.
Last season, Suzuki played 132 games and had a batting average of .283 an on-base percentage of .366 and a slugging percentage of .482. He had 73 RBIs while hitting 21 home runs and stealing 16 bases.
Even with interest from the Dodgers, reports indicate that the Cubs are not ready to part ways with Suzuki, as they consider him a key piece.
Ken Rosenthal of the Athletic reported on Thursday that the Cubs are also reluctant to trade Suzuki due to the difficulty of finding a replacement for him.
"The Cubs, according to a source briefed on the club's thinking, are not inclined to trade Suzuki even after acquiring right fielder Kyle Tucker," Rosenthal wrote. "In the Cubs' estimation, the market for right-handed hitters is thin. Replacing Suzuki, who has an .824 OPS in three major-league seasons, would be difficult."
The Chicago Cubs' pursuit of another Japanese player, while keeping Seiya Suzuki
The decision that the Chicago Cubs will make on Seiya Suzuki would influence their future as they are looking to make it to the playoffs in 2025.
According to Sports Illustrated, the decision to not trade Suzuki could end up in their favor because they are also aiming to sign another Japanese player, Roki Sasaki, as an international free agent. The Cubs were among the franchises to get a meeting with Sasaki.
It is still unknown whether the Cubs will keep Suzuki or let him go. However, if the Dodgers come to the Cubs' door with a tempting offer, it would be a test of their resolve.
