The New York Yankees are interested in acquiring Los Angeles Dodgers second baseman Gavin Lux amid the Yankees' uncertainty in the infield, Sports Illustrated reported on Sunday.

In particular, that uncertainty revolves around the gap the Yanks seem to have at third base. Last season, Jazz Chisholm, Jr. filled in at the hot corner. However, Chisholm is a natural second baseman.

As such, New York would love to move Chisholm to second and fill third with a true third baseman like Alex Bregman. Unfortunately for New York, there is no indication that Bregman is looking to move to the Bronx.

Therefore, the Yanks could pivot, dropping the idea of moving Chisholm to second, and target a second baseman instead.

Enter Gavin Lux into the conversation.

The Dodgers appear to be willing to move Lux, with the Seattle Mariners apparently heavily interested in Lux. If the Yanks and Dodgers could work out a deal, Lux would get a fresh start to reach his potential as a former first-round pick.

Lux has found himself in a bit of a squeeze in Los Angeles amid injuries and the versatility shown by Mookie Betts to play shortstop and second base.

While Betts is expected to move back to the outfield full-time, the Dodgers could explore a trade involving Lux as the club has other infield options to take over.

It remains to be seen if New York chooses to pull the trigger on a deal, or perhaps the organization chooses to give its internal options a chance.

Insider pours cold water on Bregman to Yankees rumors

Baseball insider Jon Heyman diffused talk of the Yankees signing Alex Bregman.

“I don’t see that happening as a likelihood,” Heyman wrote in a Sports Illustrated piece published on Thursday.

Moreover, Heyman wrote who he feels the Yanks will turn to fill the infield void:

“I think they’ll give (DJ) LeMahieu a shot, (Oswald) Peraza, some of the other guys potentially a shot.”

The statement underscores how the Yanks view the possibility of filling out their infield after missing out on a Juan Soto reunion.

While Heyman didn’t rule out a potential deal between Bregman and the Yanks, all signs point toward the Yanks getting creative with their infield situation. That creativity could involve trading for Gavin Lux.

With spring training about six weeks away, there is still time for New York to figure out the best possible situation as it looks to claim its first championship since 2009.
